Herbert Schibilla

Herbert Schibilla served in the US Navy Armed Guard Service during World War II
Herbert took his Navy Boot Training at the US Navy Training Center at Great Lakes, Illinois and then went to Camp Shelton, Virginia for Gunnery Training. Herbert was then sent to the Brooklyn Armed Guard Center and served on merchant ships as an Armed Guard Gunner. Toward the end of the war he was assigned to the USS Dixie, and then to the US Navy Station, Kodiak, Alaska, then to the 19th Fleet in Bremerton, Washington and finally discharged in Seattle, Washington.
Herbert had tales to tell about his voyage to Russia, including his arrest for selling a package of cigarettes to a Russian in a bar. The Russians really "appreciated" the risks we took to help them in the war.
Herbert passed away in May 2002. If you remember him, please email his widow, Sharon, at sschibilla@yahoo.com.
